Permit Test Help

The Florida learner's permit test is a written exam that evaluates your knowledge of road signs, traffic signals, right-of-way rules, and Florida driving laws. The test consists of 50 multiple-choice questions, and you must score at least 80% (40 out of 50) to pass. The questions are drawn from the Florida Driver Handbook, which covers everything from basic traffic laws to alcohol and drug regulations.

Before you can take the permit exam, Florida law requires you to complete a 4-hour Traffic Law and Substance Abuse Education (TLSAE) course — also known as the Drug, Alcohol and Traffic Education (DATA) course. This mandatory course covers the effects of alcohol and drugs on driving ability, Florida traffic laws, and safe driving practices. We offer this course on-site at our Margate location.

Once you've completed the DATA course, you're eligible to take the written permit exam. We administer it on-site, so you can complete both requirements in one convenient location — no separate trip to a government office.

While the permit exam isn't overly difficult, many first-time test-takers underestimate it and fail on their first attempt. Common reasons include not studying the Florida Driver Handbook thoroughly, confusing similar road signs, or not understanding right-of-way rules at complex intersections.

Our permit test preparation includes:

• A thorough review of the Florida Driver Handbook • Practice with real exam-style questions covering road signs, traffic signals, and driving laws • Explanation of right-of-way rules — one of the most commonly misunderstood topics • Identification of road signs by shape, color, and meaning • Review of Florida-specific laws, including seat belt requirements, speed limits in school zones, and DUI regulations • Tips for test day: time management, reading questions carefully, and avoiding common traps

Our instructors have years of experience preparing students for the permit exam. We know which topics come up most frequently and which areas tend to trip up test-takers. By focusing your study on the most important material, we help you walk into the exam room feeling prepared and confident.

One of the biggest advantages of choosing Americar Driving School is that we're a state-authorized testing center. That means you can take the written permit exam on-site at our Margate location — no need to visit a government office or wait weeks for an appointment. Walk in during our business hours, complete the DATA course, and take the exam all in one visit if you choose.

The process is simple:

Step 1: Complete the 4-hour DATA course (available on-site, no appointment needed) Step 2: Study for the written exam using our prep materials and instructor guidance Step 3: Take the 50-question written permit exam on-site Step 4: Receive your results immediately — if you pass, you're on your way to getting your learner's permit

Our staff will guide you through every step of the process, including the paperwork required by the Florida Department of Highway Safety and Motor Vehicles. We make the process as smooth and stress-free as possible.

In Florida, you can take the learner's permit exam starting at age 15 (and begin the DATA course at age 14). However, many adults who never obtained a license — or who are new Florida residents — also need to take the written exam as part of the licensing process.

We serve both teens and adults at our Margate location. Whether you're a high school student eager to get your first license or an adult who's decided it's finally time to learn to drive, we provide the same patient, thorough preparation and on-site testing.

Our testing center serves students from across Broward County, including Coral Springs, Coconut Creek, North Lauderdale, Oakland Park, Tamarac, and Fort Lauderdale. Our State Road 7 location is easy to reach from anywhere in the region, and our walk-in policy means you can get started whenever you're ready.
